YRR = easier Yacht Racing Results

Tips & Tricks

  • If you copy YRR onto a new computer, say a laptop,  then make sure that you set the Date and Time formats using Control Panel. If you don't, the dates and times will be different from those you usually see in YRR. The information on how to do this is contained in yrrdemo.doc which is available as a download from the Demonstration Version page.

  • If you copy YRR onto a new computer, say a laptop, then make sure that it has a printer (driver) installed. All YRR's print buttons format the page for your computer's Default Printer, so if you don't have a printer installed (it doesn't have to be connected) then its can't display the preview of the page. Use Control Panel and install a printer for your computer if you don't have one. It doesn't have to be connected or even exist, you just need its "driver".

  • If you copy YRR onto a new computer, say a laptop, then you may have to remove the Read-only attribute from the yrr file. If you get a message similar to "This database is Read-only" when you start, then go to Windows Explorer and right click on your yrr file....... choose Properties.......and remove the Read-only tick.

  • An entrant can be entered into the Information on Yachts table as many times as you like.
For example you may have a Class such as the NZ Sunburst, an under-powered two person yacht, which goes significantly faster with a lighter skipper/crew combination, and which sometimes is sailed single handed. To cope with this, create two entries for this skipper in the Information on Yachts table and in one list the crews name, and in the other put no crew. You can now give each its own handicap such as 0.85 for with a crew and 0.90 (effectively penalising them 5 minutes in a 100 minute race) if they sail with no crew. You simply select the correct line from the list of yachts when you are using the Select the Yachts screen.

  • You may wish to have separate handicaps for a particular skipper/yacht depending on whether they sail in a combined fleet with other Classes, or whether they just sail against their own Class. Again two entries in the Information on Yachts table overcomes this.

  • Note that the Correct the results for one race button displays the handicaps used when the race was run, not the current handicaps. So if you are correcting a skipper's name for example, the results will stay the same as when originally produced. However if you do want to change a handicap you can do this as handicaps are displayed on this particular Finishing Times screen.

  • Note that you can do things such as create new races, alter the setup of races, change race start times etc even while you are finishing races. From your Finishing Times screen, click Return to Main Menu and then do whatever you want to do. When you are done, click the Return to the Finishing Times screen and you will be back to the screen where you are finishing your races.

  • The I forgot someone button on the Finishing Times screen is extremely useful as it enables you to add yachts to your list of entrants. In spite of our best intentions there are times when we have to add someone to a race. Use this button to return to the screen where you selected the entrants, click to select the yacht to be added or type their details at the bottom of the list if they are new to your Club (making sure you click their Select box), then click the Completed button to return to the Finishing Times screen where you will find the yacht has been added.

  • As well as adding a yacht to those we are finishing, we sometimes have to take someone off the list. In the Finishing Times screen this is easily done by simply removing the tick from their Select box. YRR then ignores that line when calculating the results.

  • Series Results are not saved, they are calculated every time you look at them. This has the advantage that if you change the results for any race in a Series, the Series Result will automatically show the corrected results. So there are no problems caused by having different yachts in each race, or making changes to races in a Series etc. The Series Result will always calculate from the latest race results.

  • Series Results require you to select a Scoring System for each Series. You can experiment if you like, to see the effect of using different Scoring Systems for a Series where the races have been completed. In the Setup for the Series choose the first Scoring System. Then go to Series Results and view and print the results with this Scoring System. Now change the Series Setup to the next Scoring System and view and print the Series result again. Do this for all the built-in Scoring Systems, then create your own. It will help you see the differences between each system, and help you decide what best suits your racing.

  • You can use Control-S at any time to see the keyboard shortcuts available to you. The most useful one is Control-' which copies the information from the previous record.....I use it a lot when creating races and series. You can also use it in conjunction with the down arrow to enter Race IDs.

  • To find out how to create several sets of results from one race (an age-group regatta for example), click on the help "?" beside the appropriate "Create Additional Results.............." button on the Main Menu.

  • Use the Display the Races or Add a Comment  button to add a race comment such as "Light wind, race abandoned". These are often helpful later when awarding trophies, or looking for "lost" results.

  • Read the Help on "Setup details for each Race" to find out how to make best use of the datasheet view (looks like a spreadsheet) for creating Races. A similar view is available for creating Series.

  • You can save your results by using either of the buttons which lets you save them as web pages (for Race Day results or Series results). This lets you save in any of these formats:
Excel, HTML, MS-DOS text, Snapshot, or Rich Text Format

For web pages you choose HTML as explained in the help "?" alongside the Buttons. However you may have a need to save them for some other reason, and this is the way to do it.  The Backup Results button will also backup all your results as Excel spreadsheets.

  • I recently put the Canterbury Sunburst Champ results on www.mpyc.org.nz and it became very apparent that the crews' names were not included on the web page. It's my fault of course, as I designed the web page. I was trying to display the information without asking you to scroll across so I deliberately kept the width small by leaving the crew space out.
This is easily overcome. Simply edit the Series Results  using Main Menu > Get Series Results > select the series > Calculate the Results for this Series > Close to return to the Series Results screen > Edit the Calculated Results. Now add the crews names to the skippers as the "skipper"  appears on the web page. I amended the skippers to Paul and Isobel Moseley or Graeme Hore/Joan Stevens. Then use the Save the Results as a Web Page button. Your web page will now include the crews names and I won't be castigated for pretending that crews don't matter.

  • Creating a Series from several races is easy. Simply setup the Series by telling YRR what races to use. However care must be taken because YRR needs a set of Line Honours races to create a Line Honours Series, and a set of Handicap races to create a Handicap Series.

So for the Zephyr Nationals I created two races for each actual race. One was designated to be a Line Honours race and the other was designated to be the handicap race. For example Race IDs 101, 102, 103, 104 etc might have been the Line Honours races, and 201, 202, 203, 204 etc might have been the handicap races. The Line Series is the made from 101..... and the Handicap Series  from 201.......

Creating the second set of race results is simply done by using the appropriate  "Create Additional Results....."  button on the Main Menu.

  • The Sunbursts also wanted to use the first four races to provide handicaps, which were then to be used over the six races in the Series. I did this by creating the Required Handicaps from the first four races, and used these as a guide to give each entrant a handicap.
Now create six more races to hold the handicap results for each race, and use the Create Additional results from a completed race - using the latest handicaps button to create handicap results from each completed race. It is easy to create a Handicap Series from these results to find the overall handicap places. The Sunbursts have handicap trophies for Races 1 & 2, Races 3 & 4, and Races 5 & 6, so I created three Series to produce these results for them.

  • YRR lets you set the size of paper you print on (eg A4). Generally you don't want to have to do this every time you print anything, so you need to make sure that your printer driver software has A4 or whatever as its default size. To do this chose something like Start > Printers and Faxes > right mouse button on the printer you are using > Properties > set it to default to A4...or whatever.

  • I was recently involved in a School's Regatta. We wanted to display the School's names on the results, not only to show what school each crew came from, but to also assist in determining overall prizes allocated to schools. We solved it by using the Crew space for School........the heading was wrong but we all knew what it mean't. For those yachts which had crews, and there weren't a lot, we put both the skippers name and the crews name in the Skipper space....eg  Simon Forest/Matthew Hewson.
